DaveMode Jan 20, 2002, 02:24 PM I've recently downloaded and have been playing with Gens 1.52 (the Sega CD and genesis emulator for the PC) and I must say, it works great. I forgot how cool Sonic CD and Silpheed were. Anyway, what do you think the chances are of seeing this, or another emulator ported over to the Dreamcast? I think the dreamcast should be capable of it, especially with the games allready being on a CD and all. I'd also like to see the late Dana Plato and her half naked co-stars fighting off those ninjas in "Night Trap" on my big TV. :)
arthur_p_huxake Jan 21, 2002, 01:18 PM hi..
sega cd was an add-on for, and ran thru genesis/megadrive hardware didn't it? ..have u tried running ur sega cd games thru segagens?..using the emu as a kinda boot disc?...or ripping and burning with the emu?..the emu runs .bin files so cdrwin, blindread, fireburner may get a usable .bin image?...or u may have to mess about abit...dunno if it'll work, gotta be worth a try tho dontcha think?

rawdoggy Jan 21, 2002, 04:16 PM hot damn
I'd love to play Sonic CD and Popful Mail again!
I gotta look for that emu at least for my computer and try to find those two.
Matimeo1 Jan 21, 2002, 11:28 PM Keep us all updated! Good luck
DaveMode Jan 23, 2002, 12:50 PM I'm sure the sega "smash pack" emulator can not run Sega CD games so I'm not even going to try. The Sega CD was an "add-on" to the genesis, true, but it was more than just a cd-player that played genesis games, it had it's own graphics and processing chips.. also there was a bios which would need to be emulated (the screen that poped up when you turned on the power but didn't have a disc in). I think it'll just take someone with a little programing know how to port it over though. Oh and don't forget that Lunar, one of the best RPG ever, came out on Sega CD / Mega CD.
chubbito Jan 23, 2002, 02:24 PM what is the quality like on the new sega cd emulators that are floating around. I've seen both gens and the new one by steve snake (author of KGEN) , but the name wont come to mind at the moment, although I have not downloaded either of them. I haven't read anything on how good they actually run the sega cd games.... not to mention the scarcity of sega cd games, doesn't seem like anyone on the buy sell trade forum is selling any either.
DaveMode Jan 24, 2002, 08:24 AM The latest version of Gens plays most Sega CD games perfectly, although I did come across a couple that wouldn't boot. I think I read that it has plays about 85% of all games out there. (Sonic CD played awesome by the way) I was suprised as to how many games I found when searching a bit. I snagged a bunch off of usenet and a few from ftp's. Games are downloaded as an iso file and a bunch of mp3's. Although you can convert your mp3's to wav and burn a disc with CDRWIN that will be playable in Gens as well as an actual Sega CD system, Gens will also read the iso file and the mp3's as long as they're in the same directory and play games just fine. I'm using this technique and was able to get 5 games onto one CD.
chubbito Jan 24, 2002, 09:11 AM thats awesome, I'll see if I cant get my hands on some ISOS and I'll give it a try. If I could somehow actually find someone with original sega cd games, would it work just as well to clone the game and use that?
DaveMode Jan 24, 2002, 10:23 AM You could clone an original Sega CD game, I'm sure. The emulator can also play original games if you have any lying around. I burned sonic CD twice, once in the form of a original game, so I can play it using an actual Sega CD, and once by burning the iso onto a regular data cd-rom along with the mp3 files for sound (was able to fit 4 other games on the disc with this method)
arthur_p_huxake Jan 24, 2002, 01:45 PM hi Davemode...
i managed to get hold of sol feace and cobra command, the games that came with mega cd here in uk i told? got gens 1.60b (did have old version 0.8 for genesis roms but no cd support) then had to get bios for gens and had a good look around the site for info...uhm?...got lost in a mire of numbers, sommat about memory being split and ran between megadrive and megacd??...became utterly confused!, then came to much the same conclusion as u..heheh..oh well, just a thought..
only got cobra command running from disc..it's a very sh1t game!..ran quite good on pc tho, and i sorta ended up playing it (despite it's sh1t1ness!) for about an hour before deciding that the emu was great and cobra command had given the word sh1t a new definition...can't get sol feace running? ( altho that too has a dubious title??) discs aren't in good condition tho...got any suggestions??..might try ripping it and running as iso thru emu..oh well i'll give it another go later...

ps. get gens 1.60b here: http://gens.consolemul.com
get bios for gens here: http://www.eidolons-inn.de/
pps. not really relevant but.. u can burn the gens emu _with_ segagen on the same disc and make it a multi format type thing...play roms from the disc in ur pc, or in ur dc..and for selfboot purposes u can even burn loads of music to the first session the byproduct being it'll play it as an audio cd in any audio cd player, dc, pc, psx, etc...u can also do the same thing with dsnes+Snes9xw.exe and booboy+rew and/or vba ...genesis,snes, and gb/gbc on dc,pc and some well chosen sounds too!!...well, it's sommat to do if ur bored..
DaveMode Jan 24, 2002, 02:05 PM I got nailed with Sol Feace too.. it's currently one of only like 10 games that are completely unplayable with Gens. It comes up with the splash screen and then just hangs. I'm hangining on to the game just in case a new version of Gens supports it. And yes, unfortunately a lot of games for Sega CD were complete sh!te, probably why it died.. but there were some good ones too.. for a platformer game: Sonic CD, for RPG: Lunar, and for shooter: Silpheed.
arthur_p_huxake Jan 24, 2002, 04:18 PM damn...just about my luck, the only 2 games i got are..cobra command, a faecal freaks delight!, and..sol feace, a non starter with an equally scary name...btw, do u know of an emu that will run it? and is it any good or not?
gonna have to spend days downloading isos with my crappy 56k connection...it's like crazi taxi 2 all over again...that took me 11 hours to download, oh well, nevermind...
cheers, i'll look out for those games (download junkie me, so i secretly love this sorta thing ;-)

the game is set, lady luck deals the cards, i get a hand like a foot..it stinks!
DaveMode Jan 25, 2002, 10:16 AM Actually, downloading Sega CD iso's should be quite a bit easier than dreamcast ones, download time wise. That's because most of the disc is used by the music, which are just normal audio tracks which can be compressed into mp3 files and downloaded that way. Also the emulator can play the games without converting the mp3's back to wav. I had Sol Feace for my Sega CD, it was a horizontal shooter, and I think it was pretty good. The bosses were kind of crazy I remember.. it was available on the Sega Genesis though and they didn't really change much when it was brought to Sega CD, mostly just the audio.. so just get the genesis rom.
Josquius Jan 25, 2002, 02:18 PM I remember when shenmue was supposed to have a saturn emulator on the saturn in the living room....
Hope someone does do one of those
