ray-comp Apr 23, 2002, 08:24 AM Warning to all Lite-On burner owners… DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE! I own a LTR 32123S (32 Speed) burner and last night I downloaded the latest firmware from Lite-on and immediately installed it Guess what it did? I can no longer backup SafeDisk V2 CD’s. I tried to do it on numerous occasions using different games without success. Even the games I have so successfully backed up before, now refuse to copy correctly or as before.
Ray:tdown:
CHR15 Apr 23, 2002, 12:40 PM Yep!! I fell into that trap also.
The good news is that it is possible to revert back to your original Firmware.
When I have the new hacked Firmware to revert I'll post again and email it if anyone needs it.
celtic_druid Apr 23, 2002, 01:42 PM From what I gather, all you have to do is use a hex editor on the firmware and change the first value to that of a newer version, then you can update to an older firmware version...
However some people are reporting that they can still do SD2 just fine with the latest firmware.
83bj60 Apr 23, 2002, 02:04 PM And how would you do that if you're not proficient in hex, hmm?
I've checked both the EXE and the BIN files and cannot see a date code anywhare obvious.
Using MTKFLASH.EXE (http://wald.heim.at/sherwood/530742/dvd/mt/mktflash_138.zip) on drives using the MediaTeK chipset one can extract the BIN file from the drive and reflash another one (as long as it's the same model number). It's been done before, check at the bottom and the next page of this post (http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4579)
All you need now is someone with the same drive as yours (soory I don't), unflashed, the MTKFLASH.EXE utility to read the Flash Rom and have it sent to you :). You'll need MTKFLASH.EXE as well with a bootable diskette to flash the drive in pure DOS. I'd say it's easier than attempting to modify the firmware file in HEX...
CHR15 Apr 23, 2002, 02:47 PM Celtics right about the procedure.
The Flash will fail if you try to flash with an earlier version.
Ultra Edit 32 has been used to modify the first entry of the Firmware.
Once you have the original 32123S Firmware then this original Firmware is edited. The first entry of the Firmware is modified to indicate its an updated Firmware.
The drive is then Flashed with the Hacked version to fool the drive into reverting back to the original Firmware.
I know what I mean anyway :hdspin:
ray-comp Apr 24, 2002, 05:54 AM Got it sorted, Many Many Thanx to you all for the top advice, Im for ever in your debt, Cheers again,
Ray:):):):):):)
83bj60 Apr 24, 2002, 07:47 AM Care to expand on this, guys? I am using UltraEdit as well. Which first two bytes are you talking about, which file (I suppose the EXE) and which value has to be changed to what and how do you recognize that byte sequence that says it's an updated firmware???
I'm burning with curiosity!!
CHR15 Apr 24, 2002, 11:13 AM I've got no idea 83! I didn't do the editing of the Hex but I have now got the hacked firmware if anyone needs it.
The hacked version indicates it is upgrading to XSOT (to overcome the fail if it thought it was trying to downgrade).
The second entry is left as XSOF (the original Firmware). It's this second entry which apppears in the drive properties, Nero, Clone etc to indicate the Firmware version currently installed.
I know what you mean though, I've used UltraEdit on the file but as I've rarely poked around in Hex editing other than for messing about I'm not conversant enough in the procedures.

articulate Apr 24, 2002, 05:19 PM Hey, guys, I'm a Teac man myself, but so many people seem to love Liteon, I just wonder -- how could something like this happen, coming from a "reputable" company? And how can anybody expect consumers to tolerate this kind of unnecessary panic? I know companies like to discourage flashing, but vendors/service people have to flash for customers using the same (apparently defective) firmware. Don't they test these firmware upgrades before they release them?!
I'd return my x&!*# drive and wouldn't buy that brand again! :furious:
OK, easy now, Liteon lovers, don't go gettin' excited.... :clown:
