Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 08:45 PM I don't know what's the problem.... my dad and I have to share computers and he keeps putting this unnessecary stuff on there and he ordered some Memory Pro or something to put on the computer. Now later I get on and I want to burn some CD's but my CD burner is making noises and the green light that says disk in is red which is unusual because it's always green.... the thing is there isn't a disc in there. The tray to put the cd in won't open. I go to Nero and this is what it says....
The Win-ASPI file can not be found, therefore you can currently select only image recorders. This missing file is a part of windows 95/98/Me files
Error 16: No Adapters!
I'm scared because I want to burn some mixes for my friends by this weekend & I don't know what could be causing the problem.
Just recently my dad ordered some FreeMem Pro (McAfee) and ever since then..... my cd burner has been acting funny!
Van Nugent Apr 26, 2002, 09:04 PM Go to http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/downloads.htm and download ASPI Check & Force ASPI.
ASPI Check is used to check the ASPI layer. Force ASPI is used to update it.
Unzip Force ASPI to a folder then run instaspi.bat.
Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 09:31 PM Thanks wish me luck!!!! THANK YOU!! Hope I can return the favor
Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 09:52 PM Man.... now the computer says there isn't even a Burner in there..... I look in the control Panel and the drive is gone... It's like it never was even in there. Now what should I do???
Van Nugent Apr 26, 2002, 10:05 PM Run killaspi.bat from Force ASPI and rerun instaspi.bat to do a clean install of the ASPI.
Are you running Win9x/ME?
Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 10:37 PM No I am running Windows 98
Van Nugent Apr 26, 2002, 10:46 PM Just want to make sure you use the correct ASPI installer. :)
Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 11:04 PM Thank you so much for taking the time out to help me but I just not understanding what's the problem. The thing says it's writing but I am not using any programs and it's still stuck!I am about to get this thing!!. I followed all the directions you told me. I am using a Philips CDRW 800 Series and the drive is still not showing.... it's Drive D and the drive is gone... I tried your method and I am afraid my CD burner is about to go on the blink.
Van Nugent Apr 26, 2002, 11:12 PM If Windows doesn't detect the burner (it doesn't show up in Device Manager), there is not much you can do. Try it on another computer to see if it's still working.
Jeff2002 Apr 26, 2002, 11:32 PM Ugh.... I got the computer checking the drive... now I go to nero... I get all my songs loaded for it... and then it starts freezing. When I put a blank disc on there... it made a little clicking noise for a few seconds and the Disc In light didn't come up.... Sigh
crash-cyberdrive Apr 27, 2002, 12:22 AM Hi,
These are some tips computer components expand and contract as they become hot and cold. This causes some components like IDE ribbons PCI/ISA cards to disconect by itself (known as crawling). Now try this, If you are not new in opening the case of your pc you know what to do (protect your PC against ESD) take a look a the IDE cable on the back of the burner then remove it and re insert it on the IDE connector of the drive and do the same on the Motherboard (do all of this with the machine off). Then try again if still with problems try a new ribbon cable (ata 100) If still nothing you can try reaching the web site of the manufacturer for FAQ or email them about the problem.

You are correct in that programs like FreeMem are useless and generally cause more problems than they are worth. Have you uninstalled this program and rebooted?
Another thing you could try and that is if the problem is less than 5 days old you could restore the registry. By default Windows 98 backsup the registry at the first boot of the day. These backups can be restored. However only 5 previous backups are saved.
Go to Start->Shutdown->Restart in MS-DOS Mode
At the C:\Windows command prompt type SCANREG /RESTORE
When you get to the menu you will see a number of dated files. Use the arrow keys to highlight a dated file from before the problem began and press Enter
Press Enter again when notified that you are about to install a good copy of the registry and you will boot back to Windows
Windego Apr 28, 2002, 11:40 AM hey bro, im having the same problem, ive had it for about 2 months now. the problem with my tray not ejecting was the front panel was broke and the tray would move in to far, causin it to jam. There is a solution for this, the little emergency eject button, well it worked for me.
I hope u find an answer, and if u do can u post it up here :).
