My PC starts up fine but I can't see anything. When it's booting up, I can see the Windows 98 startup screen in it's normal colours and size but when it's totally booted up, I can't see anything. I was playing around with the screen settings ( e.g. 24 colours, 256 colours etc. ). Could this have caused the problem? If anyone can provide me with some help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

You have probably set your resolution to high for the monitor. Boot to safe mode and reduce the resolution. Hold the CTRL or F8 key when you first see the Windows startup screen.

Maybe you set the screen resolution too high and your monitor can't support the settings you chose.

Ok try this:
right click on your screen (make sure no windows are up ) click properties then go and click settings,in settings set your color /16bit high and screen area at 800X600 pixels.

I think we need a bit more info from Tom on this one ie. can he see the right click menu or not.I had something simuler happen to me in the earlier days and was able to rectify it by going back in and changing the settings to what they were before.

i understand your point rushlight. If the resolution was set incorrectly (usually to low) so that he couldn't navigate the screen to get to the Start menu, the right click might work. But in this case I think he has a blank screen (no display) to work with. Safe mode or borrowing a higher resolution monitor is the best solution I believe.

Yes go into Safe Mode and set it from ther if u can..or put another on and set your display..then try your previous monitor....cheers.
