Hi,

I have been having this annoying problem with Windows XP now for quite some time and it is driving me mad, cos I cannot find anyone else with the problem. What it is, is that now and again when I am clicking on a web page or doing something in Word or Excel, the computer will pause for about 2-3 seconds and then whatever you typed in during the pause it will then resume what you typed in when it comes back to life. This seems to happen when a sound is going to be played of some sort, for instance the click you get from Internet Explorer when you are browsing various web pages. Also the office assistant when it is about to do something that will cause a sound.

I have uninstalled my sound drivers and reinstalled them with no luck. Can anyone help me with this?

System Specs

Amd Duron 900 CPU
ECS K7S5A Motherboard (020602 Bios)
768mb PC133 Sdram
Geforce 3Ti200 AGP Graphics(28.32 Drivers)
Cmedia 8738 6ch PCI Sound card (0635 Drivers)
52x Acer CD Rom Drive
Freecom 8x4x32 CDRW
Quantum 20.5gb HD UDMA100 7200RPM
Windows XP Operating System

If there is any other info required please let me know.

Cheers,

Ace

Hi, I remember reading about this bug that affects IE & XP the other day, check out Windows Update for the fix. I wasn't having this problem myself but installed it anyway just in case.

Hi Lazza,

I have got all available updates installed and still have the problem. Good suggestion though.

Try disabling all sounds. Also are you running any CPU intensive programs that might be slowing it down?

Also try closing any open programs, maybe one is conflicting with IE. Kazza really screws IE up on my XP pc's

Hi Ace
It could be a conflict, always good to check the device manager to make sure there is no problems. You must have the AC97 switched off !, just checking.
It could be another program interupting when you are typing, in other words delaying your signal.
Have a look and see what other programs are running switch them all off except explorer and word and see if the problem is still there.
Virus checker?
cheers

Ace, from personal experience, I had the same problem with the same board and CPU, most likely cause is a conflict between the IDE and the on-board sound and/or the modem.

Hi all,

Thanks for all these suggestions, but I have made sure that A. The On-Board sound/modem is disabled through bios, which it is. B. There are no hardware conflicts at all.

I am using command anti-virus that was supplied on a magazine. I think what I will try is uninstalling it and then leave it alone for a while and if the problem does not come back I'll know then it's that darn virus program. If it is nothing to do with that, I think I will just bung XP out the window and put 98se back on.

I tell you what, most of these virus protection programs are just as bad as the actual virus's that are out there. Don't you reckon?

Ok, heres a long shot........

I read on another forum, about a problem in xp with voice recognition, apparently if you've tried it, it stays active in the task manager, and hogs a lot of cpu resources.

Since your machine is freezing when entering text, could it be that it is listening for voice input ?

Like I said, its a long shot, but maybe it helps....

Never used any voice recognition programs, Muppet2002. So I don't think it's that somehow. Good suggestion though.
