with out costing me to play. can i play without game spy?

It's free to play online using gamespy, you only pay if you wanna get rid of the ads and have other benefits. I've been trying play online but I get server timeouts. I've been successful only once.

If you download the patches from http://www.EA.com or http://www.planetmedalofhonor.com you can use the in-game server browser. Simple, but works pretty well.
