Just a direct copy, m8.
No ripping or fancy stuff needed.

I use VOB, select reader (source DVD), Tick the No Simulation Box, and from the Details box, Check the DVD-R option.

As for media, well everyone has an opinion, my favourite? Apple media, best you can buy.

as buying an movie here with jacket etc is about $2 US
which is way lower then buying an DVD_R and copying it myself, so im gussing there is another cd media out there?

Silvers are pressed in a DVD plant on propper pressing MC, they arent burned like a DVD-R. You will not be able to buy blank "silvers".
As for the other all I can say is you lucky git, $2 for a silver? round here its about £8 which is $11/$12.
Also with the right s/w you can remove all the region coding (and macrovision) from say rented DVD's that you burn back to DVD-R. Thats another post though and only if you really want to do this should you start digging, cos it's a bit more complicated than a direct copy (not too much though, if I can do it it cant be THAT tricky).
