Hello.

I've got two computers, both Compaq. One is a laptop and the other one is a desktop. I want to connect them togehter and create a network. But I want them to be connected to the internet as well. I have cable modem. Do I have to buy a network switch, or I can connect them using something else? If I have to buy a network switch or something else, I am open to suggestions.

I found this, maybe this will work. I really don't know much about networks. But anyway.

Belkin 5-Port 10/100 Mbps Network Switch — F5D5130-5
5-port switch with innovative vertical design; 10 or 100 Mbps connection capability; plug-and-play installation; network configuration software

Thank You

Do I need a switch or a router?

router would be best, with a network switch you would have to use ICS (Internet connection sharing) and the host comp would have to be on for the other comp to connect. A router has a plug for the modem and either comp can use it independantly of the other. It also is a network switch.

A router could be best to avoid any IP address problems!

If your cable provider only allows you one IP address, then a router is the best way to go. Most providers will allow you an second IP address for a monthly fee, however it really isn't worth it. A router also provides a hardware firewall so to speak if configured correctly.

how do you get it to work with just 1 ip address?.. i have 2 comps and a linksys router.. i had no clue why when i hooked everything up it ws not working.. i calle dup internet provider and they told me to restart my cable modem. and it worked.. but each pc has its own ip address... both are free though..does the downlaod speed change?. it seems like ever since i got the router my download speed got slower

I think you are confused with your internal LAN IPs and external WAN IP.

Assuming you are connected through your router, both computers should have different IPs because they are two different nodes on your internal LAN. If you check, they will probably be 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101, or something else along those lines.

But, if you check your external IP, they will both be using the same one (assigned by your ISP) because that's what the router is for. You can check here: http://www.whatismyip.com

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm just trying to clear some things up. :)

And to marimo, I would definitely go for a router. A Linksys one if possible. ;)

No, orson88, you are definitely correct, as usual. :)
I also have a Linksys router model BEFSR41 and really like it.
