i downloaded windows xp off the net. everything is ok until it restarts the computer. the menu saying 'install windows xp' and 'cancel installation comes up', so i click install windows xp, a few other screens come up and then the screen with the windows logo.. then it just goees blank and doesnt install the files... anyone know whats going on? i dont think its a dodgy download as it looked quite popular and i wouldnt get that far with it... if you know what i mean.

wass it the deviance-usa2600 version

it may be a bad version, or you may have some settings in your bios that are causing it to crash. Try it out on another pc if you can, or get a copy you know will work (ie a legit one;))

It sounds like the download has corrupted.

all the files were in a self extracting exe... when i look in the folder that i extracted them to it just looks like a windows cd... i.e. some folders, a setup.exe file and some other files. i think if the download was corrupt wouldnt it have not opened the exe file (not a valid win32 application) or whatever? all the files seem to be ok.. it does all the stuff when i click upgrade setup, but its when it restarts the pc so it can install it that it just goes blank after the windows xp logo. the version i got was windows xp pro 2600 final + license.txt i think. the compressed exe file was about 449mb

sorry, when i look in the folder it has got I386, autorun, license.txt, readme.htm, setup.exe, win51 and win51Ip. is this whats on the cd?

I think the xp pro cd should be about 530mb or something like that

Have you virus scanned the files?

i right click the folder, properties and get this:
