got a backed up copy of jedi 2 but tryed to copy it and says there a file missing when i install had the same problem with wolfenstine 2

Pretty sure that tt is not protected, neither was RTCW for that matter. Tick nothing when reading and write in whatever mode.

its not protected in any way (except to make sure the games running of the cd) - but there should be nothing to stop you from copying the cd anyway

That doesn't make any sense. It seems whoever is supplying you with those backups is doing something wrong.
