I have a problem with my PC. After running for about 20 minutes, the PC turns off the signal to the monitor and the screen goes blank/black. I then have to reboot to start the computer again. Each time after I reboot, the computer takes a shorter time to go blank till eventually it goe black before reaching the windows screen.

I thought it may back something to do with Power Management, because when I went to that screen the option was to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes. However, the same problem still exist even after changing the option to "Never".

I have one of these M/B's with the video, sound and modem integrated on the M/B, so I can't switch video cards. Besides I haven't got a spare card.

I am running Windows 98 SE on a P3 700.

Looking for suggestions on how to rectify my problem.

Thanks!

If it keeps getting a shorter time it could be overheating cpu or something - are you overclocking or anything - are all fans OK ??

Also is it just screen that goes dead - does caps lock lightup LED on keyboard ?

I'll check the fans tonight.

It's just the screen that goes dead. I don't think I am overclocking. The led for the number lock still lights up on the keyboard but I cannot tuern it off.

I turned on the computer last night and could hear the fan working?

Can anyone else suggest what else could be wrong?

Goto CMOS by pressing required key combination at startup. Normally it's DEL key. Look into Power Management section and Disable it from there.

I tried the CMOS also, but still having the same problem.

Could I by any chance have a Virus? Have McAfee at start up but you never know. The new viruses may be able to get pass the protection.

Does anyone know of a virus that can turn off certain components in your computer?

i don't think there is a virus that can do this, maybe there is something wrong with one of your hardwares.

Just simply try running Add New Hardware Wizard from Control Panel.

I tried virtually everything. I started to run the computer without the cover on and after that the monitor didn't black out. Therefore it seems to be a heat problem. Today I will buy one of those fans that fits into the PCI or any empty slot and hopefully this will solve the problem.
