This forum has been impossible so far, but here it goes. I happened on a thread with a google search about "nero software" and can't find the thread here after 6 searches with keywords and phrase searches.........
Recently installed Liteon 24102B CDRW with bundled! NERO BURNING ROM, and cannot open NERO software because of error message saying my executable file has been modified and I may have a computer virus. Have scanned drives many times with no virus results, scanned and defragged, uninstalled NERO and reinstalled NERO many times with same result. Am about ready to thro it all out in the street.
Nero's support sucks. Asus, AMD 1G, W95se, 128G, Voodoo3, 40G HD, replaced Mitsumi CDR and Direct CD. Would appreciate any input on this error.

It's probably the cheap a$$ burners you keep buying. I have had Plextor and TDK with about 3 different configurations and 5 different OSes and they all work with Nero. Sure these drive are $200+ but you get what you pay for.

:hdspin:
Get on the subject 2 dog. The burner reads fine, and the InCD on the NERO! cd installed and operates fine. It's the NERO BURNING ROM that won't open. Offer something constructive on the subject or keep your offers to yourself.

Ok so what do you want to hear then? It's not the Asus board as I have one system with it. It's not the AMD chip as that is all I have. Of course it isn't your super cheap Lite On 24X10X40 IDE CD-RW with BURNPROOF which can be had for $73 on pricewatch. If you were smart since you bought a nice motherboard and processor you should have followed suit but instead you buy Mitsumi and Lite On drives and then yell how crappy Nero is because it doesn't work with crap burners. You better wake up and smell reality I think.

Hi greybeerded and Welcome Aboard!
The reason you can't find old post you searched is we just opened up a new VBB board a few weeks ago. So I'm sure the other post was from the old board.

Anyway, a couple ?'s...I'm assuming the W95se in the first post is a typo and yu meant Win98SE, same as in the topic header.
Do you happen to know what version of Nero this is? I would guess it's 5.something
I almost think you have a bad install CD myself as I've never heard of this problem. So here's an idea to eliminate that, D/L and install the trial version from their website and see if that works.

A few more things to try...Disable AIN, and check a few more settings listed here
***********.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6832

Also I notice you did have DCD installed so I assume you also had EZCD installed before?
While EZCD never had any conflicts with Nero, DCD did prior to v5.0 It's possible that it did not totally uninstall and is causing a prob.

Now as for you Two Dog Band, I'm only gong to say this once so LISTEN UP! If you don't have anything helpful to say then don't say anything at all...period.
While I don't consider the above a flame, it's close. And if there is one thing we DO NOT tolerate AT ALL here it's flaming!!! And I will only warn you once before I toss your arse out of here. I suggest you take a good look at my Rules of Conduct posted at the top of this forum and abide by them.

Sorry Hoss, just tired of people blaming something when it isn't the prob. I can guarantee if he took out the Lite On and put in a TDK or Plextor he wouldn't have this prob. He also starts by basically saying this forum sucks. Maybe that put me in a bad mood when someone is asking for help by dissing the people he is asking.

Again I apologize Hoss and the next time I see a thread like "Max Payne sucks, it won't work with my Voodoo Rush" I will just keep quiet.

:)

:laugh:So much for the "crap burner" theory. A perfect reply.

Are you serious? Wow what is the world coming to? I decided to check what the lowest price at Pricewatch for the TDK VeloCD 24x10x40 and it was $133. The Lite On 24x10x40x is just $73. If they are the same why is the TDK twice as much? Are you sure the TDK 24x is a Lite On drive? I am not calling you a liar just confused of how TDK thinks they can compete if they repackage the Lite On drive and double the price. Is the TDK VeloCD 32x10x40 at Best Buy now for $179 a Lite On drive also?

Two Dog Band,

Are you aware that TDK is a rebadger and not a manufacturer?

Unless you know exactly what you are getting from TDK, you may wind up with a surprise rebadge.

At TDK 24x Support (***********.tdk.com/support/velocdsup24x.html), there are currently three 24x models listed, which could be from 3 different manufacturers.

greybeerded,

I agree with Hoss. This is a very unusual problem. Using a Nero trial version should confirm whether there is a problem with the packaged install disk.

Ok one of the 24x TDKs looks like it is a Lite On.

VeloCD 241040X - Burn Proof
VeloCD 241040B - Smart Burn

I also read that my 12x TDK is a Plextor. Can't they stick with one manufacturer so we know if they are good or not? This original poster is having problems with his 24x but we don't know if it is the Plextor version or the Lite On version (I would say Lite On because Plextor has an awesome track record).

There might even be more versions that I haven't found.

If you think TDK is ripping you off, then think back to the days of turntables. You know that $120 Shure V15 or Ortofon cartridge you bought. The store you bought it from only paid $12 for the thing. Yes indeedee folks, there was a 100% mark-up on cartridges.

I worked for Lombards Stereo and a brief time for Pacific Stereo and I cringed everytime I sold one of those to an unsuspecting victim errrr, consumer.

Glad you enjoyed that Inertia :D
I thought it was timely!

Yes all of the first TDK 12x drives were Plextor then they switched to Sanyo for the 16x and the first 24x units. The tip off for any LiteOn drive is the SmartBurn label as it is a LiteOn Trademark
Buslink and others are also the LiteOn burner.
I don't know that LiteOn has released a 32x drive yet?
I will say this for TDK they have alwayz delivered quality drives no matter who the original Manufacture was

And yes Roger I was one of those (cough) customers who bought those High End Phono Carts until Audio Technica and a few others starting selling them more reasonably priced.
Can you say Empire running a Stanton EEE cartridge. How about a Thorson or one of my faves and I had it for years the Philips GA 212 :)

Roger, I still have a couple of the Shure V15 Type II's around here somewhere. I can't remember what I paid for them, but I know that they were considered a premium cartridge. Whatever I paid, it was too much.

The high end audio industry still works the same way. Take a look at the Full Swing hi fi (***********.fullswing.com/salon/) site. Some of the stuff in there is so scammy that it's hilarious. Remember the green marker on the CD theory (supposed to improve audio quality)? They are selling CD Stoplight, which sounds like a variation on the theme.

Or, you can buy one meter long audio connect cables for $250, and only $125 per extra meter. The site is full of these ripoffs, which have always appealed to the more neurotic monied hi-fi addict.:D

My thanks for all the constructive posts. Downloading the trial version is the one thing I hadn't tried yet. Thanks for the links Inertia and Hoss. I'm having much better response from the site now that it's not the middle of the day. I'll learn one day. Many thanks once more. Have one on me.

Uninstalled Nero and downloaded NERO5564.exe. Did this twice with following error when attempting to open it, "Install program corrupted, maybe it was damaged during downloading. /bAborting installation."
The version of the NERO bundled cd is 5.5.5.6
Yes I am running W98se, CD-RW Sec. Ide/master.
Have gone through your link =*threadid=6832 and made the appropriate changes.
Did have EZCD installed while using W95, but didn't after going to W98se.
I suspected that the DCD version 1.01 I was using under W95 was no longer compatible with W98 since it's 3 years old, and that's the reason I was having problems with my old Mitsumi CD-R. Started to upgrade to later versions of DCD, but the further I went, I began reading that DCD prior to DCD 5 does not support W98se, so uninstalled DCD 1.01 and the updates to, I think it was 3.01. Did the reviews of Liteon and had always heard good things about NERO, thus the Liteon 24102B, 24X10X40 CDRW. It was time anyway.
Have searched for any leftover DCD or even EZCD files to delete. Don't find any, which of course means nothing.
Start to suck my thumb now in the fetal position.

See if someone has a copy of the 5.5.6.4 installer and can run a MD5 checksum on it (e.g. D/L from ***********.stgeorge.com.au/eCash/verify
I can't do it right now because 1) i am @ work 2) in the meantime version of nero has changed on site to 5572.
If the two checksums are the same you have downloaded the real thing and the prob is somewhere else.

Ok here's an idea that hasn't been mentioned just yet. Have you tried uninstalling NERO and then editing the registry? If NERO is giving you this much of a headache I recomend doing this. Go to run and type regedit. Then do a search for nero. Delete all the keys that have nero in it. After this reboot and reinstall NERO. This way you have a clean install. ( End user note, be very careful when editing the registry. If your not sure what your doing find someone who does! )

Thanks, and good luck!!

Danmezzetti and XndeX, thank you for your ideas.
Have deleted all references to Nero in regedit. There were quite a few.
Will D/L 5572 as soon as the web's smoke clears tonight. We're still on dialup out here in the farburbs. It's hard to believe dialup can be so slow sometimes. We're hoping for direct cable this summer sometime. In the meantime we just
and watch the seconds tick by. It's good to see there are posters out there who want to help.
