if i drag a 500 meg file from a cd to my hd it takes about 20 mins on my 24 speed cd burner and about 30 mins on my 52 speed cd rom. ive got a 30 gig hd and a 60 gig hd so i should imagine that they are fast hds. is there any way of speeding it up!

ive got a amd 1400

any thoughts as ive got 40 cds to do!

cheers mates

Set DMA to ON on both CDROM drives.

It's not the speed of your HD that's affected, it's the extracting speed of the CD-ROM. 20 mins for 500MB from a CD-ROM sounds about right. It also depends on the size of the files and the number of files.

Goto Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> CDROM and choose "properties" on each CDROM drive. Then goto "Settings" and select the DMA check box.

It would be useful to check this for the harddisk too. It's the same procedure, but you goto "Disk Drivers" instead of CDROM.

For a more reliable measure of the transfer speed try a normal data cd first eg game or programme (non protected). VCD will always be slower, but 20 minutes is bad , maybe the disc is poor quality.
