Sony Cuts Price of PlayStation 2 Console
Tue May 13, 2003 08:13 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Corp. 6758.T lowered the price of the PlayStation 2 video game console to $179 in the United States ahead of the introduction of an updated version next month, a company spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
In order to clear out inventories of the existing unit, Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokeswoman Molly Smith said retailers were informed of a change in pricing.

The new PS2 hitting shelves next month at $199 includes an adapter for online game play and modifications to the hardware that allows it to play home-made DVDs. That version of the market-leading console was announced at a press conference Tuesday morning at E3, the video game industry trade show in Los Angeles.

By Tuesday afternoon most of the nation's largest retailers of video games reflected the discounted price on their Web sites, including GameStop Corp. GME.N ,Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp. ELBO.O and Best Buy Co. Inc. BBY.N

Smith initially said early Tuesday the price cuts had been the initiative of the retailers but later said the decision had been that of SCEA, which had lowered the wholesale cost of the unit.

Many video game industry ****ysts had not been expecting price cuts on the PS2, Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT.O Xbox and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s 7974.OS GameCube until the fall.

But the move by Sony could increase the pressure on its two rivals to follow suit.

should i buy the system now used for 149.99, or buy a new version for 199.99? would it be compatible to the newest mod chip out?

Uuh, sounds like you mean $179.99 for a new system DC_Fisherman. Well, it's a matter of choice. Does the used one come with some other "perks"? One thought is sometimes you are buying someone else's headache's. Yes the new PS2's are compatible with the latest Messiah 2 code (1.30) and the DMS chip. As far as the Magic, I don't know.... Also, as soon as you tear apart your brand new PS2, the warrenty is no good. So, it's a matter of your own choice. If you get a used unit tho, made sure it's a version 4 or newer. Earlier versions are a PAIN to chip and just not worth it.

I hope this helps.

Take it easy

Shaks! and I just buy a new v7 a few weeks ago and had it modded with a Magic 3.1 that is working like a charm... but maybe I should wait a month.. Oh well.

so that new ps2 with the adapter coming out next month... can anyone confirm that it is still as easily modded as the previous versions?
