.avi playback problems

i have a prroblem playing back an .avi file. when i play it in windows media player all i get is sound and no video. i am using divx 3.11

when i rightt click on the file and go to properties i see three tabs...general, details and preview. this is what i get:

general: type, location and size are correct.

details:audio format-MPEG Layer-3,39 kBit/s, 22,050 Hz, Stereo
video format-480 x 352, 59970 Frames, 29.971 Frames/Sec, 76 KB/Sec, Unknown Format

preview: video not available. cannot find 'vids:divx' decompressor

does anyone know of a solution for this problem? i see that a new divx codec has been released. should i upgrade to that.

FourCC code for DivX311alpha is DIV3(low motion) and DIV4(high motion)
Install divx5.02 and it should solve your problems although I believe the file is actually DivX 4.xx

thanks for the insight, but if i install divx 5.02 codec will all of my old divx movies still work. i read somewhere that not all of the older divx movies ae compatible with the newer version.

It is supposed to be backwards compatible. When you installed DivX4.xx you had the option for it to play back divx3 movies or not... I don't recall such an option for Divx5.02.

It has worked fine for me.

I had the same problem

I had the same problem but when I tried playing it on the old Media Player it played with better quallity. Goto start > Run and type mplayer2 (xp only) and you will get better playback than the default player.:)
