what are the 3 out of 4 disc's your on about?? Do you have a cdrom drive? and a floppy drive in the lappy? boot from a win 98 floppy, use fdisk, delete the primary partition, re-create it, then format it.. go into the bios and set it to boot from the CDrom, slip the windows XP disc in and let it re-install itself

the disks are the system restore disks. I have no floppy drive, no windows 98 disk and I don't know about fdisk. can I just boot from my cdrom with an xp cd in the drive now ?

you should be able to boot directly from a windows xp cd, providing you have your cdrom selected as a boot devices in your bios... no need for those horrible floppy these days.
