drives no longer burn

Hi all

since i reinstalled windows XP and SP3 neither of my cd or dvd burners will burn discs. They both operate as cd roms but not burners. I could do with some advice please. Details of drives below as well as actions already taken to try and remedy the problem.

CD burner = Samsung CD-R/RW SW-25B
DVD Burner = HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4163B

Win XP Home SP3

When you view the icons for the drives in My Computer they are listed as CD Rom, when you place blank media into the drives they briefly change details to CD-RW and DVD-RW respectivly and then revert to CD Rom.

I have tried the Microsoft support link

********support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q316529

which has you change the numbers of the drives in the Registry and this did not work. When you view the drives properties the recordable tab is present, neither are set to "enable cd recording on this drive" by default but when the check box is ticked it makes no diference.

I also tried uninstalling their drivers and have windows rediscover them, it found them as they should be but then reverted to cd rom mode.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

As an aside does anyone know why i cannot create a restore point in XP despite the function being set up for all drives??

Many thanks for you radvice

Russ
