well i was told to use nfts...so thats what i've been doing, i could try the fat32.....

the reason why i am doing this is be/c i had win me and than all of a sudden it couldn't get past the win me boot up screen...it would just sit there...so now i'm trying to put windows xp on there

The best thing to do with the bios is just use failsafe or default setup.

Playing around with advanced features is a recipe for disaster.

Has this drive ever worked properly and how long have you had it?

Sounds like time to get another.

no its always worked....i've had it for over 4 years....every since Win me though, things have been weird...and than i couldn't even get past the boot up screen....i know win me has so many bugs and it def screwed my comp up...i just want to install xp which is much more reliable...

It is highly likely that you have a failing hard drive. Look where the evidence points. Take the drive in to a shop and have them run some diagnostics on it.
