Default Airport question

sponsored links

since I cannot connect my PC & iBook with Bluetooth to use the PC's Broadband connection I guess I will have to go the route of Airport

What is the cheapest card or USB add-on for the iBook G4 & PC (the iBook is Airport ready)?

Is it easy to do?

Which would be the cheapest online shop? (I'm in the UK)

would Wireless USB adapters like this work if I had one in each?

doesn't have to be that one exactly, just one like it that has Mac drivers (I know Belkin do one with OSX drivers for around the same price)

should work on the PC side cause a few mates at uni are doing exactly that. networking via a few usb wireless adapters. as far as the mac goes i presume it is the same but have not seen it done. As you are wanting to share a broadband connection i suggest you go for 802.11g and not 802.11b
802.11g has a transfer rate of 54 megs (theoretically) compared to 802.11b's 11 megs.
The belkin adapter should do the job but again i haven't actually seen it done

Hi m8

Am mailing u from that exact set-up - have belkin USB network on my PC (802.11b) and am using built-in airport card - just setup the network on your mac using system prefs - no softaware or additional hardware needed for the mac!!! May want to go for 802.11g - but 802.11b is fast enough even with three networked lappys!! If you want to d/l stuff then go for 802.11g......

One thing though the 802.11g is really only more useful than 802.11b if you want to transfer large files back and forth to each other on a network

Wont really help for downloading

USB 1.0 max theoretical speed is 1.31MB/sec
802.11b max theoretical speed is 11 Megabits 1.31MB/sec
802.11G max theoretical speed is 54 Megabits 6.44MB/sec
Max Cable speed that I know of 3 Megabits per second =.36MB/sec

So the theoretical max speed of 802.11b is still 3.6 x faster than the quickest cable modem connnection

Also for real world speed for file transfer is about 1/2 of the theoretical for 802.11b and 802.11g is actually 10-20 megabits speed instead of 54 megabits (that about only 2 times faster than B's max theoretical)
