Hi all,

There seems to be various programs out there that claim they can remove data and scrub your h/d clean......then there are people saying no these dont work and the data will always be recoverable!

can anyone add any facts to this matter?

Cheers

If you take a video tape and record over one show with another, can you recover the previous show? (NO) The basic physics behind a harddrive platter are the same as video tape....magnetic particles on the surface change polarity when the read/write heads pass over them. Once those particles change position there is no way to now how they where previously positioned. If you are thorough about clearing the drive and overwritting your old data there is no real way anyone can recover anything usefull from it.

Unfortunately, most people who are trying to clear a harddrive aren't thorough about it and all they pretty much do is clear the FAT or partition tables leaving the rest of the drive intact. The FAT\Partition tables tell the OS where everything is on a harddrive and without them Windows thinks the drive is blank. All those recovery programs basically do is scan the drive for the data that was not overwritten and restores it's entry in the FAT and Partition tables. (A good ****ogy would be taking a reference book and ripping out the index pages. Without the index it is difficult to know where anything is in the book but if you scan the book page by page you'll still eventually find what you are looking for.)
