Default What speed should I expect from my LAN?

sponsored links

Our network at home is set up like the picture attached. The switch is an 8 port fast ethernet switch, and all cabling is 10/100. What speed should I be getting transferring from one PC to another? At the moment I get like 50 k/s ... shouldn't it be lots higher?

cheers, sorry about the crappy picture, in a hurry

The bottleneck is probably going to be with the ethernet cards on your computers. Assuming they are 10mbps each, you can expect about 1200 kBps (kilobytes per second). If you are using 100mbps, then expect 10 times that.

Edit: 50kbps is not even dialup speeds, and if you are referring to 50kBps, that's about 1/3 the speed of a T1, also very slow for a LAN. You might even want to connect a crossover cable between your machines to see if the problem lies with the switch or the computers / network cards.
