Unhappy wireless network

I've just installed DG834G netgear router onto my home computer, but when i try to get access to the internet through my new laptop there is no network connections found in range, can anyone advise me on how to fix this.

When I initially install Wireless devices I always try to make sure that the PC and Wireless Router are as near to each other as possible, to make sure you have got a signal.
