Ok here is the lowdown- got a new old laptop free 1998 compaq evo n150.

It starts off

safe mode safe mode with networking
ect

so press enter on start normally (btw this does this no matter wich option i choose)

then windows xp pro starts up (C 1985-2001 ) then the message.

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufactureer for any windows updates you might ned.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If your need to use safe mose to remove or disable compenents, restart your computer, press F8 tp se;ect Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000000ED (0x8173fd98, oxc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

So i try safe mode and there are supposedly criticle drivers missing (learned from a buddy) then the same screen comes up after the list of drivers comes up from safe mode."

now F10 is how you get into the BIOS setup but how do i get it to basically boot off of the NEW xp disc i've got? (btw i don't have the back up discs from the guy i got it from- just the comp plus the cord)

if that does not work or i can't find out how to get this thing just to run xp (i am not using this for hard stuff - for car tuning- and writing my book. what do you sugest? (btw i don't think the board is fried if it was it would let me know from POST- which reminds me how do i get this thing to read back me POST? i am not sure if it is or not- i don't see anything in bios)

thanx in advance to any help you all cna provide.
