Not necessarily. A widescreen television has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1). But some movies have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, so you'll still have the black bars at the top and bottom. The only difference is that they're not as large compared to a regular television.

I know for a fact that the fast and the furious is 2.35:1. Look at it this way though 2.35:1 is 50% black bars on a 4:3 TV and only 25% or so on yours.

I must admit it confused me at first about my tv being widescreen & a widescreen dvd was playing with borders but celtic_druid has summed it up in a nutshell.

They are sourced from film which is widescreen, the only way to get them to fill the screen is to chop off the sides, which is what is done for video.
