Default Phillips dvd writer

I've just installed my writer, that went ok but when I put in the setup disc or any of the other disc that came with package I keep getting

"windows cannot read from this disk, the disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows"

what do I need to do here?

Running xp pro...

I bought one from PC world a while back.Took it back the same day.I found it wouldn't read anything apart from the Philips DVDR that came with it.
Very Poor
