1.4ghz cpu should be plenty fast for capturing video. what causes dropped frames is the systems inability to process some or all of the (video) data being read in. off the top of my head, these are some factors which (could) affect ur capture and need closer investigation:

- CPU speed and cycle availability (use fast CPU and terminate ALL background tasks)
- hard drive speed
- hard drive fragmentation
- hard drive location on which IDE bus (master vs slave, primary bus, secondary bus)
- type of hard drive (SCSI vs EIDE)
- noisy video (vhs); inherent ****og "noise" when capturing from vhs adds to the amount of data being captured;
- poor connection (flimsy cable, dirty contacts, poor seating) between vcr and TV/capture card causing more "noise"
- capture resolution (speaking NTSC, a 704x480 rez is four times the amount of data than a 352x240 rez)
- capture framerate
- insufficient system RAM
- poorly written video card capture driver
- location of capture video card on PCI bus (topmost PCI slot preferred)
- conflicting software/drivers
