Default V1.3 Tsop Flashed and switch fitted....Sweet

sponsored links

I've just managed to do the following.

Took off the Winbond 2M flash chip and Fitted an AM49LF040B flash chip containing:-

Lower Block Original V1.3 Bios 256K
Upper block 4977 Bios 256K

I did not put any switch on to start off with to see if the X-box would boot.

It did with the upper block Xucuter 4977 bios....strange I thought.

I then pesumed that the upper address line A18 was floating so in this case it would be high and run the upper block.

Put EvoX dashboard and software on.

Then fitted a switch to A18 (pin9) and ground. This would then force the lower block to be used when operated.

Success.

With switch off it boots EvoX dash and with switch on A18 grounded it boots the original dash.

The added bonus is that with switch off you can flash the onboard bios from EvoX dashboard, just need to get the correct line of code in the evox.ini file and find the relevant points to short on the mobo.

Can't see why this has any disadvantages over X-ecuter 2.2.

It took more time looking into chips that have the same footprint and pin outs that I could get hold of easily.

Took bout 5 mins to open up the X-box and take the bios chip off the board.
I'm using second hand AM49LF040B chips from scrap boards at work so it took about 5 mins to clean them up. Make sure there were no solder shorts, clean the flux up and make sure there were no bent pins.
About 2 mins to blank the AM and program it.
About 5 mins to refit the chip and put the X-box back together.

All in all about 20mins.

But I've spent the last two days playing:-
Reading the winbond original bios chip as my flash programmer didn't support it. So I had to find a chip that was a very close match and disable the device ID check.
Making sure the 1.3 bios was ok, building a 512K image.
checking the addressing and a few other bits...

but I'm well chuffed with the results.

I'm located in Bournemouth Dorset UK.

Think I'll be dropping my prices for chipping, say 30 with switch all models.

Sounds like a fair price seeing the amount of work I put into it.
