Default NEC 3500 4x Burning Behavior?

sponsored links

Just got the drive from Newegg and I've burnt several good disks, but I wanted to see if this is normal.

When burning 4x (all I have is some old BeAll 4x disks), the drive burns at 4.12x, but dips down to 2x for a second (and the buffer almost hits 0%) at several spots on the disk, and then goes back to 4.12x. It seems like it's doing Z-CLV, but at 4x it should not do this right?

I just wanted to make sure this was normal, I havn't had a chance to test it at higher speeds yet.

Thanks!

The only time I've experienced this sort of behaviour (I've got the 2500) is when the hard drive I'm burning from is on the same IDE channel as the burner or/and the hard drive is badly fragmented. Hence the HD read speed is quite poor.

This doesn't apear to be related to hard drive read. The read buffer is maxed out, it apears to be caused by the write buffer.

I'm starting to think it's normal with this drive though.

It's somewhat like the low spikes seen in the review graphs.

Notice the dips in speed and buffer (they show up throughout the burn, and not only at speed changes).

IMHO is that it is FW/Media/System. Presently burning consistantly at 8-16X with quality TY+R and brain dead Ridata.
Try 2.18 for FW and close out applications that are not needed. I have two systems and the high end system is more consistant in burn speeds.
