Very fond of the scan quality my Canon F50 provides and would highly recommend that to anyone looking for a good multi-function device ... but as I'm sure you know, brand vs. brand doesn't tell you much.

It's very hard to go by specifications when it comes to scanners etc.

You really need to read a few reviews as both seem to have fairly good specifications.

Have a look at this THIS site, although I can't vouch for how good or bad it is.

I've just swapped a Canon 630u (forerunner to the LIDE range) for an Epson Perfection 2400. I can honestley say I was very pleased with both of them. The LID scanning with the Canon produces excellent scans and is contained in a really small case which looks brilliant, but the scans were really slow (and you can't scan negatives or slides). I looked at the LIDE 50 when I changed but needed to scan photos so ended up buying the Epson which is absolutely brilliant. The scans are superb whether it's documents, photographs or slides - colours are excellent (as were the Canon I may add).

I don't think you'll go wrong with either, but if you need to scan negatives consider the Epson 2400 (not sure if the 1670 does photos) but I believe the 1670 is pretty quick.

Check out www.comet.co.uk Epson 2400 116
