Newest technology to remove DRM from any DRM music in 2008

Yesterday I came across exciting news that we could get 1000 free songs on iTunes! Here is some excerpt from iTunes Offical:

“When you tell a friend about the iTunes “12 Days of Christmas” promotion, using the online feature at during the Promotion Period, you will have the option to enter a prize draw to win 1,000 free songs for download on the iTunes Store for the United Kingdom. Residents of United Kingdom aged 13 and over only.…”

And Apple has setup a special website for it, which is at:

Have you ever download music from Windows Media Player, iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, AccuRadio, or Pandora? As we know, most music provided here are DRM protected music.

What is DRM?

DRM (Digital Rights Management) - The anti consumer copy protection that prevents you from using music or movies in a way that suits you. For example, if you purchased a m4v music from iTunes that has DRM, you can only play it back on a compatible device, so if every piece of music had DRM on it you would need to buy the same track on CD to listen in your CD player or car, as a ms store download to play on your Zune etc, but since you paid for it once you shouldn't be forced to pay for it again and again.

If we remove DRM from DRM music files then we can play the music on phone, iPod, Zune, PSP, CD player, pc, and anything else that you can listen to music on.

How to remove DRM from DRM protected music?

Recently I have tested many different ways and several tools to remove DRM from DRM protected music. Then summarize 3 main ways list as below.

1.Virtual Sound Card. (Newest technology in DRM removal)

As the technology development, the application of virtual sound card is wide for popularity. With a virtual sound card in your PC, it is possible to record any sound signal through your sound card in the background. So new way to remove DRM from DRM music is coming out.
Record DRM music while it is playing in your PC. Discard the DRM of course. It’s completely legal

Recently I have tested wondershare streaming audio recorder, it works well in the sound quality. Below it is the simple steps how I tested.
Step1 Download and install Streaming Audio Recorder.
(I use the trial version, it has 15 days full function trial.)

Its Official website:***********

Step 2 Launch recorders and your DRM music to start.

Step 3 Enjoy the music till the end.
Streaming Audio Recorder will record the DRM music from your virtual sound card while it is playing. The noise around you can not affect the recording quality.

Tips while testing:
1.Do not play any other sound in your PC while recording music, or it will mix with the DRM music.
2.Record several songs. Just add them into your media player; the recorder can split the songs one by one automatically.
3.You can change the output music format such as mp3, m4a, ac3, ape, ogg, etc. The default format is “mp3”.

In addition, you can use it to record any streaming music from internet, such as music on all Radio stations, iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, MySpace, etc.
What you are listening is what you will get.

2.Burn DRM protected music into DVD and then rip

Actually, this is the original and crude way to remove DRM from DRM protected music such as WMA M4A M4B M4P ASF AAC etc. Generally it needs 2 steps,
Step 1: Burn the DRM protected music to a DVD.
Step 2: Rip the DVD to your computer, and then the DRM protection must be removed.

It not very convenient and may wear out your CR-ROM. And windows media player can only burn and rip the WMA.
What you need: DVD copy, DVD ripper for other formats

Hook is a complicated technology which can be used to remove the DRM from protected DRM music. It can ****yze the basic audio structure and remove the DRM parts away.
Comparing to “Burn and Rip” method, this way has much higher conversion speed and quality
Comparing with recording process, these sorts of DRM Removal have much higher conversion speed.
As far as I know Daniusoft and TuneBite are the top two vendors in this area. They provide DRM Media Converter, DRM Music Converter to remove DRM with Hook. These converters can support all popular DRM formats such as WMA, WMV, M4A and M4B, M4P, M4V, etc.

What’s a pity; these tools are a little expensive. Generally it will cost you from $30 to $ 40.

Merry Christmas!
