Default If I enbale WEP on my router, there is a 50% decrease in throughput what's that mean?

I read that if I enbale WEP on my router, there is a 50% decrease in throughput what's that mean? I own a Netgear MR314 and am running wireless cable internet to my laptop. Thanks in advance
