Default If I have a router, do I need a software firewall as well?

I use a router, which I believe acts as a hardware firewall as well. Do I still need to have zonealarm installed on my PC? Should I get rid of it and rely on my router for Protection, and free up some resources, or Should I keep it as extra protection? If it isn't really necessary, I will uninstall.

any suggestions?

Truth is, it cant hurt. Unless your router is a Cisco router, 9 out of 10 .... the routers on the market today cannot be totally configured to stealth ALL ports. And beside that, if you have any applications on your system, such as ftp server, or even just MS file sharing on a small LAN, then yes, a software firewall can be a big help, and adds a visible configurable interface, that most routers do not have. So at least you can see whats going on.
As to using Zone Alarm pro, well, im sure your going to hear hundreds of replies that ZA is great blah blah blah
But I have been in the Network Security field for well over 15 years, and ive gotten past ZA before, so i dont recommend it.
A really good newer firewall on the market is Agnitum Outpost.
It has many of the features that all the other mass market firewalls have, but its engine is extremely stable, and does not attempt to take total control of your PC like Norton and ZA.

Okay cheers for your help. You're not the first person who has recommended outpost to me, I think I will give it a try, see if I prefer it to Zonealarm.
