Default xbox and region 1

will a bog standard xbox with the dvd thing installed play region 1 disks, and in fact will it play dvd-r's

No... and yes.

It will play DVD-Rs as there are no region settings to the Discs, (unless they have been authored that way).

Get a DVD Region X, that will play everything.

If you are in the uk and play a retail region 1 disc as your first dvd it lets you but then sets the region as being region 1 thus preventing playback of r2 discs

like neminator says dvd-rs have no code (or are region zero) unless you force it to be a certain region, so they will play no probs
