well the update is that if I reset it enough, it eventually works. I read something in another thread about the fact that if the wires between the chip and the pins are too long it might be finiky. The wires on mine are fairly long, not a pro job, but everything it connected right. could this be a problem?

Hi Steve,

yeah it's called ground bounce. This can happen if the wires are too long or cross over a lot and the signal is corrupted. May be worth shortening up and trying not to cross where possible

I rewired the whole thing tonight and made all the wires shorter, especially the ones around the bios (these were about 2wice at long before). I also made sure there were NO solder bridges. Its late and ill test it a little more tommarow, but I am still getting the same problems. SOmetime disc read error, most of the time red screen of death, sometimes it works?!

I forgot to mention. I did have to open the cd drive to get a screw out I dropped in there earlier. Could some dust have gotten on the laser? whats the best way to go about fixing/ removing it.

best way to clean up the laser head is with a cotton bud and rubbing alcohol. This is sounding more and more like it is a problem with the laser than anything else
