Default Windows XP problem...slow !

sponsored links

This machine is so slow it sometimes tales outlook express 30 seconds to open. All windows components are extremely slow. It's a celeron 1.4 with XP pro and 128 megs of ram. The hard drive has casching checked in the properties, which i assume is XP's way of saying "DMA"?. Nothing running but the basic necessities. I clean the thing up on a regular basis. I'm at a loss at this point.

I'm good with 98 and know how to tweak it for speed, but XP is new to me. I heard XP needs more ram than 98, and it only has 128. But i can't imagine that being the cause because this mashine is just rediculously slow. Any ideas on how to speed it up?

Thank you...

You don't have enough memory. You'll notice a speed increase just by doubling the RAM. You should have at least 256 or better yet 512megs of RAM (or more) to use XP effectively.

You can try getting rid of some of XP's "flashy" stuff. Goto control panel, system, advanced tab, and performance. Uncheck a lot of things and try that. As already stated though more RAM would definatley be in your best interest. 128 is just not quite enough.........just my 2 cents

To check dma settings you need to look at the IDE controllers section of the device manager.

B.T.W. I would agree with qwerty & nightheart that you need more memory. I wouldn't try running XP with less than 256Mb.
