Question REFORMATING? [; ; win98SE]

sponsored links

well, i'm about to embark on the reformating train. i've checked the reformating info from the jmwebdesigns.com and i just want to clarify a few things when i'm in DOS.
1-C:\Windows>CD\ or(CD..)
2-C:\>FORMAT C:/S then hit enter
now, are the above entries correct or i'm reading the instructions wrong?
tia,

how are you going into DOS, using a win98/ME boot disk? are you formatting the main drive or a slave drive.

if so then firstly ME won't allow the /S switch to be used anymore. so boot from the floppy and then at the a prompt just type -

format c:
or format c:/s if using a win98 boot disk.

i will enter DOS from the shut down screen. i've noticed when i tried my start-up disc, it asked if i wanted to start-up in different ways. i only have one drive so i guess that would mean the main drive. i've had my system since jan2000 so i'm about due for a clean sheet. i just want to make sure i'm doing things the right way, otherwise the wifey will chew me dearly 'cause she needs no downtime at this moment.

I don't understand your replies.

Use a startup floppy, and at a command prompt fdisk and format c:, then boot with CDrom support with the windows CD and it will install.

You can sometimes get away without using fdisk, but it can also cause problems.

Is this really the only reason you're refomatting?

If the system is running ok and wifey needs the machine then leave it alone! Especially as if this is the first time you've done this. If you are intent on going ahead with this make sure you have posession of all the drivers for your mobo, modem, graphics card and any other hardware you have installed. You're HDD and CD ROm are ATAPI and shouldn't need drivers.

Wouldn't like to be in your shoes if it all goes horribly wrong - mind you Valentines day coming up - could be costly for you
