Default wireless network how to from scratch

some help and advice on setting a wireless network up to 2 computers maybe more in future,
downstairs winxp upstairs win 98 would like if poss usb plug in devices if possible, what i am after is for both computers to access each other use internet at same time ( advice on broadband service wich is best to use and not to use for networking ) also using printer and maybe scanner for both computers idea on prices for bits and bobs would be gratefull.
my house is 1926 built andwalls are quite sturdy,i hope what i have put here is helpfull for someone to give me advice
