Default Modchip options

I am wondering what would be the best chip for me or if i should go with the ways that u manually open the cd drive. Does the type of chip limit the options that i have on my console? I have modded a few xboxs before but not ps2. are there applications that can be loaded on the ps2 like media players, ect, or is the ps2 mod chips sitrictly only let backed up games play and no other applications be loaded onto the ps2.

Mostly i want to b able to play the backed games I have of my own discs to take to college so If someone steals the games, i can just recopy my own, only loose the cost of the dvd-rs instead of the actual games.

what other options, besides the ability to play backed up games, do you have with the ps2 modded? also will all of the backed p ps2 games work on a modded ps2?

any help is greatly appreciated
