Default Help! Should I get my PS2 modded with a Messiah 1 or Magic 3.1?

sponsored links

I have a version 4 PS2 that is compatiable with a Messiah 1 and need it modded. I already have a Messiah 1 and Magic 3.1 but I don't know which chip to have installed. I'm thinking of just having the Messiah (more reliable?) installed but I'm not too sure. Should I have the Messiah chip or Magic 3.1 installed?...Why?

All down to personnal judgement. The Messiah is well regarded as a very stable chip, but the Magic 3.1 is newer and more capable (just), the old Messiah 1 doen't use the onboard clock of the PS2 so some games were troublesome. The Magic 3.1 on the otherhand, being virtually a clone of Messiah 2 does use the PS2 clock signal (although it is mainly for cost cutting) and people have had very good results, personnally I would go with The Magic 3.1 as the code is newer (ish) and is meant to be more compatible, but in the end it is up to you

Are you kidding me? I'd go with the Messiah 1 before I'd consider the Magic.

Some features of the Messiah 1:

Full DVD9 support
No need to tap reset to boot games. Boots from browser and the unit acts unmodded.

Disadvantage of the Messiah1:
PSx boot procedure.

I'd go for Messiah1 as well.

PSX boot procedure is only a double tap of the reset anyway, in my opinion easier and quicker than the Messiah2 PSX/film boot method.

As I said, personnel judgement and cost all come into play when choosing the modchip, otherwise you wouldn't have no solder mods being sold by the bucketload, not because they are better, but because they are cheaper

The way I understand it (since I don't class myself as a full time installer like Spagboll or you Moddogs, is that since the Magic3.1 is basically a clone of Messiah 2 AND on Messiah2's website they even state NOT to use Messiah1 (because of Messiah2 of course ) then the argument starts to go on price, a lot of people that mod their PS2 can't afford something like the PROPER Messiah 2, or the DMS3 (opinions as of yet not that clear) but something cheap, that will do the job it is asked for.

In the end it boils down to cost and effectivness, The Messiah 1 is known for it's reliablity but still has had some problems on some console revisions and games refusing to boot (not many, but there have been posts in the past), same as Magic3.1

Cool, thanks for everyone's comments. I'm going to just go ahead and get my PS2 modded with a Messiah.
