Default XP not recognizing/reading(?) CD-RW Mitsumi CR-4804TE

sponsored links

Hello,

I am having problems with the Mitsumi CR-4804TE CD-RW Drive that came with my HP Pavilion XL766 PC running Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

When I insert a CD into the drive, the reading lights go on (green), and the mouse icon changes to indicate that the drive is being read. But when I click on the CD drive in Explorer, the status bar indicates there are "0 objects" in the CD. I verified that the same CD works fine on other machines.

After a while, the lights on the drive go orange/yellow, indicating that there is something wrong.

Further, when I insert an audio CD, and try to access it from Windows Media Player, it says "No drive in [D:]"

With an audio CD in the drive, I tried plugging in headphones in to the jack on the drive, and I couldn't hear anything.

The windows update wizard (ha!) says that the drivers for the drive are up to date. I looked at the Mitsumi website for verification, and the last firmware update for my model was in 2001!

My feeling is that this is a software/firmware issue, rather than one with hardware, but I could be wrong, of course. Before I toss out this Shitsumi drive, I want to make sure there is no hope for it. Does anyone have similar problems, or any clue for how to deal with this?

Thanks.

Don't have a solution but I have a Dell machine running sp2. Had trouble with the Phillips drive that came with the machine. It would not complete a mirror or backup.
I purchased a new plextor. It worked at times. I then got the same problems that you describe. I emailed their tech support and never received an answer.
I just installed a new sony drive.
We shall see.
From what little I see on the web, I am beginning to think it is a problem with Windows.
Thanks
Tim

You can rule the drive out by following the [URL=***********.cd-burner-help.com/hardware-test.htm]ROM Drive Hardware Test

If it passes the test follow ********support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321641 and also the links at the bottom of the Support Page.
