They're just rumours. Even thinking logically about it, you can tell that they are probably rumours.

First, 8X DVD writers. What happened to 4X? Did they completely ignore it? No industry in their right minds would make such a technological leap and market 8X without marketing 4X first. There would be a lot of money lost if they didn't come out with a 4X first.

Lastly, DVD9 is not even technologically possible at the moment. In my own opinion, DVD9 DVD-R's will never be possible.

I see your point on the 8x but "DVD9s will never be possible" - why not? (out of interest)

How can DVD9 - DVD-R not exist..surely every DVD9 that is in existance is only a small step away from being a recordable version. Correct me if I`m wrong but the data on a retail DVD9 has to be recorded/pressed onto a blank DVD9 at some point surely?

But I agree 4x would be the next logical step but they need to get the dvd media consistent yet before going to 4x.

well dvd9s are two dvd5s moulded r pressed together as far as i know but no1 knows how to actually get them together with data on both-u wud either need em to be prewritten or a dvd writer which writes to both sides,so therefore 2 lasers, one which is able to see right thru the first layer-all very complicated, which is why dvd9 blanks are unlikely as u wud need a very special piece of equipment to actually utilise them

as for 8 times , just think about how much data that would be burning . i think there will be a lot of rejects. 4 times will probably be the equivalent of a 40 times cd burner so i doubt if they ever get any faster than that
