Default No dial tone?

sponsored links

I've jst installed an old modem into an even older PC, windows 98 detected it and installed the drivers no problem but when I try to connect to the internet it reports the modem can't detect a dial tone.
All the cables work fine with another PC, is there a setting I've missed somewhere or is the modem broken?
I've checked and unchecked the box, wait for dial tone but it still wont work.
Please help.
B.T.W, it's a connexant hcf56k internal pci modem.

I can think of a few things :

IRQ is conflicting
Wrong cable (they look the same, but some modem req different wiring)
Drivers not installed correctly or wrong driver

And because you didnt post your PC hardware details, I also suspect that the modem you have may not be suitable for the PC, as some modem req'd a certain spec for hardware before they can work.

There is no IRQ conflict according to device manager and windows automatically installed the drivers, they should be the right ones, shouldn't they?
The modem did used to work in a lower spec machine 18months ago anyway. It used to be in a Pentium 133, it's now in a PII 350 machine.
How would I get the correct drivers when I don't know who made the modem?
Is device manager reporting the modem type/maker incorrectly?

Ferret
Can you 'query' the modem under Device Manager ?
If you can and it return a list of response results, then I would suggest a cable problem.

As you have stated that your modem is a connexant hcf56k internal pci modem Then this link HERE may help you to find the driver for your modem.

But i would think as duffy as already stated that you are using the wrong cable for that modem or the cable is fauilty,
