okay, i've got a pretty nasty virus on my machine right now, and i think my only option is to reformat. i have an hp with media center on it, but i don't think i have the xp install disk anymore. if i use a different install disk, but still use the same key that i have (from the sticker on the tower) A) will it work, and B) is that lawful?

The key would only work if the version is the same.

For example, there is Media Center, XP, XP Professional, OEM etc.

You can't use one key from a certain version, on a different version, it won't accept it.

If it works, it's lawful as long as it's only in use on one machine, or whatever your license agreement is.

If it's OEM, it's forever tied to the original machine, regardless of whether it's currently in use. (Which is why OEM is cheaper to buy).
