Question open ports

sponsored links

Hi,
I have Windows 98SE.

I have just checked my IP address with

www.ipchicken.com

and it tells me that I have open ports and to run their Security Port Scanner.
What are open ports and what do I do about them.
Should I run their Security Port Scanner.
Thanks,
bimbo.

Open ports can allow traffic in/out of your machine basically and closing them effectively tightens your security.....think of it like this

In your house you have the Front Door, Back door and all the windows open, but you only user the Front Door and back door to gain access and leave.......but Barry the Burgalar can still gain access via the house windows.........make any sense?

Some ports should be open and other public access ports closed.do the scan as recommended and see what results and recommendations you get

Normally under Windows, some ports are left opened, for the purpose of network, servers etc.

A software such as ZoneAlarm or Sygate Firewall will close and block these ports, making them stealth, so to stop people on the internet from scanning for them.
