It sounds like a corrupt or dodgy file.

Not much you can do if that's the case. Try another source.

Default Avi files are probably ok

Please don't rush to blame the pirate downloads. My experience is identical to yours, Windows XP pro SP2 just does not seem to be able to handle these AVI files. However I can play them absolutely perfectly on a pc loaded with windows XP media center edition. This has no problem at all. Why this is the case I do not know. I feel sure there is a simple explanation, the difficulty though is trying to find it. If you do not have a copy of XP media center edition try a left field solution, if you have a second PC available try Linux to play the video. If you have not experienced Linux I think you will be positively suprised. It would be worth it if it solves the problem.
