Default System can't find hard drive

Windows 98 Pentium 266 10 gig Fujitsu hard drive

Everything was working fine, then the system froze, so i rebooted it and it came up with a Hard drive error.

Would not let me start in safe mode, so i used my startup disk and selected option 1. The tools were loaded to the C: drive (I think if there was a hard drive then the tools would have been loaded to the D: drive)

From here i couldn't fdisk , format or anything.

So i went into the bios and checked the settings in there, the hard drive settings seemed right.

I put the hard drive into a pentium 550 and used the startup disk, the tools were loaded to the D: drive and i could see the contents of the C: drive..

My question is what would cause it to dissappear from the 266?
I did notice that the bios seemed old compared to what i have seen.

Thanks in advance

It,s exactly that "Hard drive error" there is no hard drive.

It's not saying boot drive failure or anything like that.

After "Hard drive failure it trys to boot from other sources..

Is this what you wanted to know?

i could be that your hd did not format proply, may have to do it again, or may need to switch hd settings from primary slave!!!!

Check all cables are installed correctly (not loose or anything). I then would regardless of what bios says, redetect the hdd just incase bios hiccuped on restart. Once done try using your bootdisc and restart your compy.
if that fails, i hope you are left with a dos prompt. if so you should be able to change path to your a: drive, explore the floppy disc and start fdisk to reformatt your hdd. do a restart and all should be well.
