Default Any way to burn files (eg. Nero, Adaptec) in non-alphabetical order?

sponsored links

When selecting files to burn to CD-R using Nero or Roxio ECDC, the burned files in the CD-R become in alphabetical order. (ie. when you use a DIR command on the burned CD, the filenames are now arranged in alphabetical order, courtesy of Nero or Roxio).

Is there some way to burn files so that they are burned/ordered in a non-alphabetical order (say, sorted by date or even the order in which you placed the file into the list of files to burn to the CDR?)

Is there a mastering program which doesn't automatically sort the files alphabetically when burning them to CDR?

Do you mean youwant them to show up in a different order when you list them in Windows Explorer or use "dir" command?? If so, in explorer, just click "Date" at the top or "Size" or whatever. That will list them in whatever order you need. Also, do a dir /? and it will tell you how to list files in a certain order (date, name, size, etc).

The files aren't necessarily burned in that order so to speak. It is just the way you choose to list them when viewing them. Is this what you are asking?? I may be completely misunderstanding you. If none of this helps, just let us know.

Onlymenotu, I've also thought of numbering the files to prepend "01 " "02" if there's no other solution.

Zack, thanks for clarifying my question. Yup, I want to view them in a certain order (it's more logical that way). See example below:

I have these set of files to burn to CD-R:

DX5CORE EXE 1,553,008 02-10-98 5:23p dx5core.exe
DX5ENG EXE 3,664,024 02-04-98 6:18a DX5ENG.EXE
DPLAY50A EXE 231,552 09-11-97 10:35a DPLAY50A.EXE
DX6CORE EXE 1,598,704 07-29-98 10:51p dx6core.exe
DX61CORE EXE 5,072,632 01-08-99 6:10p dx61core.exe
DX70ENG EXE 6,311,904 09-09-99 7:00a DX70eng.exe
DINPUT7A EXE 233,104 12-17-99 11:47a DINPUT7A.EXE
DX7AENG EXE 6,340,040 12-08-99 7:00a DX7Aeng.exe
DX80ENG EXE 11,477,656 11-07-00 3:16p DX80eng.exe
DX5CPL ZIP 21,503 07-14-97 5:00p DX5CPL.ZIP
DX6CPL ZIP 41,748 01-08-99 2:33a DX6CPL.ZIP
DX7CPL ZIP 43,237 09-08-99 4:55p DX7CPL.ZIP
DX8CPL ZIP 35,051 11-14-00 2:00a DX8CPL.ZIP
[/pre]

I want the above files to be burned in the exact order as displayed above. The filenames are not exactly alphabetical, nor are the dates exactly in chronological order (I want the dates to retain that way). [regarding the exact order of files stored in CDR, it may or may not need to be stored in that order, but the order of directory entries when being displayed is preferably in the above manner]

When I do "DIR" of those above files burned to CDR, I'd like them to be displayed that way since it's more logical... (the first file contains DirectX5 core, second file contains DirectX5 with drivers, the 3rd file contains DirectX5.0a DirectPlayupdate patch, etc.) I want the dates to be retained so I know which DirectX was released at around what date. The last files are the DirectX Control Panel files and are listed at the bottom, also in chronological order, but separate from the main DirectX files).

Is it possible to do the above?

Unfortunately, Windows Explorer lists must be sorted by Name, Size, Type, Modification Date, or Attribute since these are the column headings. If the sort column has duplicate entries (with attributes and type it wouldn't be unusual for them to all be the same), the 2nd sort key is the Name (since it will always be unique).

In order keep a list of the original burn order, you may want to include the file list from the burnware on the CD. In other words a text file with the following contents for example:
Quote:
DX5CORE EXE 1,553,008 02-10-98 5:23p dx5core.exe
DX5ENG EXE 3,664,024 02-04-98 6:18a DX5ENG.EXE
DPLAY50A EXE 231,552 09-11-97 10:35a DPLAY50A.EXE
DX6CORE EXE 1,598,704 07-29-98 10:51p dx6core.exe
DX61CORE EXE 5,072,632 01-08-99 6:10p dx61core.exe
DX70ENG EXE 6,311,904 09-09-99 7:00a DX70eng.exe
DINPUT7A EXE 233,104 12-17-99 11:47a DINPUT7A.EXE
DX7AENG EXE 6,340,040 12-08-99 7:00a DX7Aeng.exe
DX80ENG EXE 11,477,656 11-07-00 3:16p DX80eng.exe
DX5CPL ZIP 21,503 07-14-97 5:00p DX5CPL.ZIP
DX6CPL ZIP 41,748 01-08-99 2:33a DX6CPL.ZIP
DX7CPL ZIP 43,237 09-08-99 4:55p DX7CPL.ZIP
DX8CPL ZIP 35,051 11-14-00 2:00a DX8CPL.ZIP

Thanks again for all the above work-arounds. Unfortunately, it seems that there's currently no other way (hex-editing the CD image file?? that'd be extremely tedious!) to do the above with the features built into the CD burning/mastering programs. :-(

Maybe I can try writing to the software developer to add the above feature (burn order of files/directories is user-selectable) to their program (Nero? Roxio? will they listen? as it's probably not a top-priority feature)

Makes me wonder though how some commercial CDs have their files not organized alphabetically -- they must not have used a CD burning/mastering program to burn a master copy of their files...
