Question Installing Linux of a laptop

sponsored links

I'm OK with computers and a pretty quick learner - but have never built my own PC from scratch or installed windows etc.

I have an only micro laptop (7" screen and tiny case, looks really nice) but it's pretty slow at running windows millenium edition which was on it when i bought it.

I just want it for running a basic email client, web browsing, rss and ocassional word processing - nothing else.

It's pretty basic it's a Xerus c282 (never been able to find out ANY info on this laptop or maker) - 233mhz 96mb ram (max) and 4 gig hd (thought i would like to replace with with flash memory if possible...) no onboard USB ports.

I dont know much about the on board sound card etc - but i won't be using this for music. But I also don't have the drivers for this (I don't think so) or for any of the other installed components.

The only thing i would like to add would be a pcmcia wireless card if possible, or a LAN port if i can't add that (not sure if it already has one will check tonight).

Ideally I would like to run a VERY light weight and simple linux build.

So what build should i be looking to install? How complicated will this be? If i replace the hd with another flash or similar hd with I be able to go back to crappy ol windows if i need to?

Any pointers would be gladly accepted - if this is too hard it will go on ebay as a project for someone else!

thanks,

L
