Default XP does not see CD/DVD ROM drives

sponsored links

Hello,

First time posting here. I think I deleted (by mistake) files which in doing so have caused XP to not recognize my two CD/DVD drives. They are listed in the device manager and when I delete them and reboot, they are recognized as new hardware. They are also shown in the BIOS. However, they are not shown in My Computer and Nero does not see them.

I have tried multiple times to download and install drivers and on a few occasions during the install I was told that there was no drive present that matched the driver.

I was also told on another forum that the problem may lay with my ASPI layer drivers. But that is not my area and I'm really lost on what to do.

Any help is appreciated, because I'm at the end of my rope with this problem.

Thanks a lot!

If you are using XP have you tried to do a roll back to a date previous to you doing the deletion of the files etc.

There are no drivers for CD or DVD drives as they are not made or needed as XP has the required genetic drivers built in.

Try this:-

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Curretcontrolset/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, for some reason, System Restore was disabled and I don't have any restore points that I could use from before the problem happened. I will try editing the registry. Just a question before I do: Do I only do step 7 if step 6 is not needed? Or do I do both if necessary?

Both step 6 (UpperFilters) and step 7 (LowerFilters) should be there and both need deleting.

If one is missing then this is where your problem lies.

Once both have been deleted reboot and XP will install fresh drivers, so check to see if the drive/s are now listed.
