put in the winxp cd and boot off the cd "press any key to boot from the cd..."

Choose the clean install of xp.
Then you'll see partition information.
You'll have an option to delete the partition or re-partition the harddrive and format.

Choose to delete and then choose fat32 or ntfs. (i like fat32 better)
That will take maybe up to 45 minutes on a 40gig hard drive.

If you did all this and it still freazes, write back and let us know exactly where it freezes.
Is it after the formatting? Before?

ps - just to clarify: winxp, when installing, will give you an option to set the partition and format. DO NOT click on "keep existing partition"

If it freezes before all that, wait. Wait a long long time.
I have seen computers take a very long time and it seems as if they froze. But wait one hour and i bet you it'll start up.
